It Took Him Away
Poem by Jessica "Dazel" Valadez

HIV or was it AIDS?
How was I to know it would take you away?
It would leave my uncle 6ft under,
and his niece left to wonder.
Why did you stop breathing?
Where did your soul go?
I didn't know, I was only 9 years old.
Now I see your picture and I understand,
12 years have gone by without you holding my hand.
We have the same smile and we share the same last name.
Through you I have learned the importance of life and that it's not a game.
I remember you never let the family see you suffer,
And you were a fighter the whole way through, I guess I get that from you.
I can recall things we did when I was so young,
Walking in the streets if San Francisco and all the happiness it brung.
Now when I go to the city I still remember where you live,
That white building to the left as soon as we get off the bridge.
And your big house in Texas, the last place our eyes met,
Thinking back to that moment I will never forget.
Running down the stair case and there at the end you would be,
To greet me with a big hug and maybe a game of hide and go seek.
I know you found your way in heaven cause you appear to me in dreams,
I hope my mijo finds you and you hold him like you held me,
Love him like you loved me
and teach him all you taught me.
