Why Did Lil' Yasenia Have to Die?
Gang Violence Is Taking Innocent Lives
Story by Erika Mendoza // art by Wesley Vara

Have any of you ever thought about what kind of problems are going on in our community right now? Well I think that the main problem everywhere is that there is too much gang stuff going on. There's always the problem with the Surenos and the Nortenos. They get into fights with the opposing rivals, for their hoods, barrios, and for a color.

Have any of us really though about the consequences of all these gangs? Well in the first place, many innocent people have been killed even though they weren't the target. People go around fighting and killing people and all of this for what? Why fight and die for a hood, the world is too big to be fighting for a cuadra or hood, life is too short to live it in jail for killing someone for a hood. There have been some cases in which the rival gang tries to shoot someone else and they miss. Here is something that might make some of you guys think about how bad this gang stuff affects people.

"The year old little girl victim of gang violence,Ó I read as I stood in silence. What is going on in this world? Lil' kids being caught up in this bullshit game and all because gente want to be part of a gang. This innocent child was killed and lowlife cholos are the ones to blame. Lilâ Yesenia hit the floor as neighbors heard the Òbang.Ó She wasn't the intended target, they were after someone from a rival gang, and as always they missed and hit Yesenia as she played a game of tag. The shooters fled the scene and left poor lil' Yesenia to bleed. Shortly after 3pm, lil' Yesenia was pronounced dead. The white sheet that covered her skinny body was soaking up the red. Up in the clouds angels were preparing her heavenly bed. At the funeral everyone from family, friends, to local residents showed up to pay their lasts respects. Her coffin was light pink, and inside a girl rested in peace. To the left, her parents yelled out in grief for they've lost their angel at the short age of three. Now they'll never see their daughter grow up with such ease, or hear what she wanted to be. This child's life came to an end and news is filled with sad headlines once again, ÒThree year old is dead due to conflict between blue and red.Ó

Doesn't this make you think about how many other innocent people have been killed and all because people are fighting over a stupid color? All these problems wouldn't be happening so much if there was more cooperation from everyone. Most of these gangsters are introduced to gang life at a young age. The gangster veteranos go around introducing the ÒgoodÓ things about being in a gang, they tell them that all them Raza are familia and they will always help each other out. All this is true, but later they start getting them introduced in drugs, and later in selling drugs. All these people don't really know that even though they are familia they make you kill and sacrifice other people's lives. People, all I ask is that you guys think about the subject and try to help from getting more innocent people killed.

Right on, sister. Ending the gang bang could be a big (social) jihad and stories like this would be the sword of Allah
