Question of the Week:

In France, "alienated" youth have been burning cars and buildings for the past two weeks. They are mainly immigrant youth under the age of 25. The riots began after two young people were killed while being chased by the police. The young people in France say they are tired of police brutality, unemployment and discrimination. Those issues also plague American communities. Can something like what in happening in France happen in the US? Why or Why Not?

Lets not forget the Seattle, WA riots during the WTO meeting in 1999. While the scope is different from France many individuals were arguing for similar issues such as job security, change in the political system, and discrimanation on a myriad of levels.Ê Riots for whatever the reason can happen anywhere the question is, is it always the positive appraoch to issues?

The riot in France I think are possibly forcing the country to deal with its racism and colonial legacy just like the Watts or Rodney King riot did for America. I think it is definately possible here. I can't say why, but I agree that the US has more control over folks, but I don't think it would be a sure stop on anything.

I think what's happening in France,   is not just reaction to things being fucked up. It has to do with, as I recently read in an article, 50 years of fucked up shit happening to a group of people in france.

I may not be a product of a 50 year legacy of oppression (or maybe I don't realize that legacy yet), like the courageous ones in France; but I think I'm on edge. I feel like the last 4-5 years have been decades; and I've lost many things. I don't want to loose anymore.

I think San Jose is one of those hot spots, where folks are being robbed and they know it. Physical losses like Cau Tran, Rudy Cardenas, & Dale Cuevas remind us of just that, us being robbed (economically, spiritually, culturually etc). I think the air is thick. It could get thicker if something like Walker (the officer who shot Rudy Cardenas) was found not guilty.

If anything went off, I think it would go off in the bay area. Would the rest of the country join, I donÍt know. I'm not sure if the initial courageous ones in France were thinking that, when the shit hit the fan.

Hell yah it can happen here, I mean like you said the same things are happening here, maybe even worse. I think the french may be on to something...

i also think that the u.s has more institutional control over minority groups than france does and i think today, those riots cannot happen because the u.s. is alot more agressive security-wise
