West Coast Funk Fest This event was held on October 15, 2006 at the Alum Rock Youth Center, put on by Funklab and a number of partnering organizations, including the City of San Jose. There was a high turn out for having been the first event of its kind combining a car and bike show into a hip hop community event. There were a variety of things to see which consisted of a 2 on 2 popping and locking competition, display of classic street car and low riders, a display of customized bikes, graffiti wall murals, a silent art auction, vendors display, local D.J's, rap artists, dance performances, and a raffle. A variety of young and old poppers and b-boys dance circles were among the crowd to entertain the community as well. The judges were Fayzo, Boogaloo Dana from the dance group Medea Sirkas, and Brian from Playboys Inc. It was a sight to see this popping competition take place. There were more young poppers on the sideline watching than entering. Perhaps they were not ready to enter and just wanted to get a feel for what to look for in the next competition. Overall hopefully San Jose will have more positive events like this to involve the community and these youth will have a place to show and continue their talents in leading their lives towards a positive lifestyle.
