In this session we began by talking about the scandal surrounding Mayor Ron Gonzales in his dealings with the NorCal garbage company that led us to ask what would you ask of your public officials, like the mayor and what are concerns they should know about?
Anonymous My question to the mayor is why would you as a leader, not follow through the responsibilities that were given to you? I truly believe that having that responsibility means following the rules at all times. As a mayor you are representing the city of San Jose and I think it's a shameful thing to do what you did. Everyone does make mistakes, but if you can't hold up to your responsibility as a mayor then you could have gave it up to someone else.
I feel the peace officers and other persons in authoritative positions instead of being so judgmental, disrespectful and so ready to stereotype others should realize that people do make mistakes, and be open to give the support necessary to help them get back on track. Degrading and shunning people is a negative that could push these people back where they came from or even deeper. Regardless of our mistakes we are human and deserve to continue to excel in our lives, especially once we pay for our wrong doings.
There are no resources for women in the women's' correctional facility Women who are incarcerated are just left in jail with no resources for help. Most inmates who are incarcerated are left to figure out things for themselves. The CO's won't help them. Women are treated like animals. You're never allowed to ask questions or bother the CO's. They judge you because of your incarceration. There are no programs for help so that women can re-enter society and succeed. They are basically set up to fail. There are so many smart women who need help. The only help they receive, if they are lucky, is from other inmates who can inform them. A large amount of women go to jail and prison because they didn't realize they had choices. I think the treatment and information and resources should be improved and I think the mayor could prove to be more helpful because the way I look at it, if you change inmates (women) with the direction of their life they will grow and benefit the community instead of making them become a bad statistic.
Why is it that when a person who is working and/or going to school they are not given the opportunity to receive housing? You have to have a house full of kids and no education at all to get help. I feel that housing assistance should be given to those who are trying to help themselves. Like maybe a 5-year program where subsidized housing is provided for single working moms. A lot of times I feel that I wouldn't be in the situation I am in if I could get some kind of assistance. The cost of living here is sky high, jobs don't pay very well and bills are more than what you take home.
