The Unexpected People That Were There For Us
Writings and audio by Women's Work Furlough

My Mind Is Still Free

Stephanie

Since I've been in jail I thank God for all the support from my family and friends. They have really been there for me. Nothing has changed for me; I still have the same support that I had before coming into custody. While in custody God has placed some really good people in my life. I can say being in custody opened my eyes more and I realized how much my freedom and family really mean to me, it makes me appreciate everything that I have. My body may be locked up, but my mind is still free!

My Big Sister
Chelle Dumont

Since I've been in jail I've learned to trust women more. I've made a real good friend, Kim, who has become my Òbig sister.Ó She's been my strength, my ÒmomÓ and my best friend all in one. I love her and hope we can continue our friendship outside these walls. She's given me hope for my future. No matter what, I'll never forget the impact she's had on my life.   Thank you Kim!

Mended Old Wounds and Coming Home

Jodi Kersewell

Before I was arrested things became really ugly while living at my Dad's house. I was always high, fighting, yelling, and just causing chaos in any way I could. It got so bad that they actually served me with a 30-day notice to leave. Those 30 days were the worst of my life. Living in a house where there was so much tension that no one even talked o each other. On the 30 th day I moved into my own place and progressed in a downward spiral. Until, I crashed and ended myself in jail. Since this last year I've mended some of those old wounds, and when I leave here they are actually letting me come back home. I've been given a second chance, a beginning to a new, and happy life back at home with the ones I love and who love me.

Unexpected Words of Encouragement

J

I have been in jail since November 2005 and I have had a lot of support from my family. I receive letters, cards, pictures and many words of encouragement. However, some of the family members that I thought would be right there for me I haven't heard a word from. Which disappoints me, but is understandable since some family members work. The one person that I didn't believe I would hear from was on of the first; my brother in law Chuck, who I am close to, but did not expect to receive such an encouraging letter that was filled with words of love and you'll get through this. This meant the world to me and I have let him know this. Believe me I am not disappointed by any of my other family, I love them, but Chuck's letter will forever be something I will cherish.

Ken

Jenn Chambers

He was once a love of my life, but an awful boyfriend. 10 years later he is still the best friend I have. Unconditional is the love I receive. Supportive phrases and uplifting cards containing a few dollars to dial him when I can to say ÒHi.Ó Thank you, God for my friend Ken.
