Fundraising for Katrina Doesn't Have to Match the Tragedy
by Thuy Ngo

In the aftermath of Katrina criticism seems to come easy, and not even those who are in the helping efforts are immune because some say those flashy fundraisers don't reflect the tragedy. Why should it?

Throwing events and organizing in the cause of a tragedy such as hurricane Katrina is good because it shows solidarity. It seems wrong to have fun for an event when people are suffering, but it's not really the fun that is in focus. It's the cause of being part of the solidarity that is at stake, and showing that we as a people are there for one another. Coming up with a way to bring people together for a cause is difficult. People are always suspicious of what's really being done with the money, or they just don't care even after all the commercials and fundraisers. We live in a very individual oriented society where people for the most part do not seem to have time for others. This is not to say that they are heartless, but rather you never know what to expect of others in this society or that helpless feeling of ÒWhat can I really do?Ó With all that is said and done, I say the easiest thing to do to bring people together is to have an event whether it is a charity concert or some other fundraiser where people can show their support and faith for a cause. So why not have fun while you're at it?
