It's All a Dog Fight
The Michael Vick Scandal Hides the Real Cruelty of America
Story by G. Melesaine

So you probably heard about Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcons NFL Football player who is currently getting barred from training camp and indicted with a felony for animal cruelty dog fighting charges. The main focus of the conversation seems to be that dog fighting is either wrong or right. In my opinion, I think cruelty towards any living species is wrong, therefore this story will have little to do with dogs and animal rights, but more about all victims of cruelty.

In America, way before I was born, or the NFL existed, there was something called an auction block, a human auction block. This is where slaves were to be showcased to an audience so they can bid on which slave they thought would be accessible or of value towards their monetary desires. Monetary desires meaning how much cotton can this slave mass produce for the owner. Since the auction block was a visual showcasing, slaves would be forced to present themselves nude so the prospects could see how physically fit he/she was, and because they were stripped of their clothes and their humanity they were no longer were people, they became products.

Something I learned about marketing is the 4 P's, product, pricing, placement, and production. The product was the key though, so with that, they would do whatever it took for the slave to be visibly physically fit with training, exercises, oil for shine, and whatever they could do for the highest bid. After slaves were bought off the auction block, they were brought back to the plantation where there was also internal slavery, where slaves would compete against each other to become the masters "pet" or make it into the masters house, which was the ultimate.

Years later, we have what some people call the NFL or the National Football League. This is where men, usually of color, train to do whatever they can to be drafted into football teams so they can work the football fields and produce the most points. Those who draft them are usually white men. Football is a sport where people are

entertained by a battle between two teams, players have to deal with being hurt and almost being killed, constantly battling each other while the crowd gets incited. They fight to get to the Super Bowl, which is the ultimate. On the contrary, they also receive fame and an immeasurable amount of money, but never as much as the owners. As William lynch, a plantation owner from slavery days who actually wrote about how to control slavers, would say "give them just enough." The NFL has become a way to escape financial troubles for most of the players and getting paid to play a sport they've come to love with all the extras. Sometimes I wonder if the same love for the sport would be there if there was no money and fame involved?

Now comes dog fighting, where people train dogs to fight and it incites and entertains the trainers/audience like Michael Vick while they place their bets on which dog will kill the other dog and how well they've trained them enough to win. Which brings me to certain correlations since Michael Vick is an African-American and a NFL football player who is being persecuted through the media right now, I think they're are far more liable people that should be persecuted than him but they never will. This is not a matter of animal cruelty to me but another way for the media to cover up other cruelties going on in America.

Of course its wrong that dogs die in the fights, as it is when children die in Darfur, but you'll never hear PETA or the Humane Society being as compassionate about that. I think there's a much bigger problem in America than this and for this to blow-up as big as it did just showcases Americas morals and ethics. It's a sad thing in America when there are children out there who would honestly trade lives with Paris Hilton's pet dog.

To be honest, Micheal Vick does deserve punishment. I do see why he lost endorsements because his actions reflect poorly on sponsers, jail time ain't out the question though not forever since he abused
and murdered animals, and abusing dogs is wrong, hands down. Him being fined a decent amount of money would probably be needed punishment as well because people do attempt to get their act
together when their money is at stake. But him possibly being kicked out the NFL is crap. Besides this being too much what constructive purpose would his getting fired serve!I think this article can be a
little too deep at times but some people do care all too much about animals when they could give a flying flip about people. There are people that care about both human and animal rights but this is true. I can understand PETA's focus since they are an animal rights organization but this attack on Vick is a red herring type issue that diverts from more serious ones-even probably animal rights-in some
cases- even though Vick unfortunately put himself in this line of fire and deserves some criticism! This will be used to slap the whole black community in the face. I am not saying Vick should get a pass
but everytime something happens like this, this usually happens. Athletes that beat their partners and rape women are not anywhere nearly as punished and stigmatized as Vick is about Dogs. I wonder if
SOME of the folks slandering Vick would whine and moan if he beat up a homeless person-specially if they were black. Speaking of the homeless and domestic abuse survivors, shelters for the homeless and domestic abuse survivors are hard to come by but wealthy dog owners create mansions for their pets while they treat actual people like dogs. I do feel that a person mistreating an animal is not above mistreating people but when people can't get along with each other, it is no surprise we mistreat animals. Sad and should happen but no surprise.

First, PETA is about animal protection there are other groups for other issues. Second, we cannot change the past only the future. I had nothing to do with slavery nor did you nor did Michael Vick for
that matter. Your analogy between football and slavery is absurd - many white men wish they could play well enough to make the team and of course some do. If you want to take it that far, we are all
slaves for compensation. How is football any different than my 9-5 job; oh yeah, millions of dollars. Whether 2 legs or 4 no animal deserves to be starved, killed, etc. The real issue here - is indeed
eithics and morality. If you can treat an innocent animal that has not harmed you with such lack of compassion and cruelty - how far off are you from taking the step up and treating a human being in the same manner? Obviously there is no deep compassion for the living no sense of what is right or wrong happening inside Mr. Vick. That is why he should not be allowed to play football - and should be in jail. As should anyone who has committed a crime - enough is enough.

I disagree with some of the statements in the article. The mission of PETA or the Humane Society is to protect animals. They are hardly in a position to make any statements about the terrible situation in Darfur or for that matter of the public schools in LA or Harlem or Appalachia! While I do sympathize with Vick's predicament and agree that he is quite possibly being treated unfairly, he should
really act more responsibly toward his community.

What a stupid article; comparing football players to slaves is like comparing gold to lead.

Are you for real? I think you should have your head examined as your comments do not remotely address what this bastard did to poor helpless animals, such as electrocution, drowning, hanging, etc., etc. What have your dumb comments have to do with what this sadistic, vicious, evil monster did to innocent helpless animals? I realize there are countless number of other issues that should be dealt with in this universe but we take them one day at a time. If you feel that what this bastard did to animals is not dispictable and disguesting, to say the least, then I suggest you visit a shrink. And last but not least, the death penalty is not good enough for this monster and I suggest that he be placed in a cage with wild tigers, eaten up alive and then burn in hell.
