Heated Emotions
Story by Jessica "Dazel" Valadez

It's summertime, and things are heating up. This summer San Jose and the whole Bay Area are reaching record temperatures. We're starting to have blackouts all around our neighborhoods. But not only does this heat wave cause blackouts, it's also being associated with other things. Some say that the hotter it gets, the more violence erupts.

But I for one don't find this to be true. There's always going to be violence no matter where you go or what the temperature is. As the heat started climbing in San Jose this summer, I have been seeing people spending more time together. Walking in the streets of my neighborhood, people were having BBQ's and sitting on their porch having a drink. Whether it be the blackouts, or just homes to hot to be in, I started to see more of my neighbors chatting, laughing, and just hanging out.

Even at my house, my family was getting together and having more Òfamily time.Ó We went swimming, ate lunch, and believe it or not I had a good time! It wasn't the usual shindig with the family fights and family gossip; it was more like a Brady Bunch episode. I'm still in denial of how close the heat has brought us.

Being Downtown is even a peaceful experience. I'm used to seeing most people drunk and making a fool of themselves. Or when you're dancing up in the clubs and you bump into someone and you hear ÒWatch where you're going bitch!Ó or   ÒYou got a problem bro?Ó Well lately, it hasn't been like that. I haven't seen as much public drunkenness and when I bump into someone I hear ÒExcuse me!Ó   and ÒI'm sorry!Ó

It's a trip, why isn't it like this more often? For all those people who are reading this and know what I'm talking about, enjoy it. Summer only comes once a year and if it's hot outside, wear sun block!
