June 18, 2008 marked another Silence the Violence Day where communities throughout the Bay Area united to promote peace and recognize the ongoing battle against violence. In San Francisco at Excelsior Park, the vigil began with an opening ceremony from the Xiuhcoatl Aztec dancers followed by testimonies from community members. After a moment of silence to recognize those who have lost their lives to violence, community organizations such as the APICRN, Brothers Against Guns, Communities in Harmony Advocating for Learning and Kids, Community Youth Center, Inner City Youth, Taylor Made, the Boys and Girls Club, the Healing Circle, United Playaz, and Vietnamese Youth Development Center, marched down Mission Street to the Excelsior Boys and Girls Club. People marched together to demonstrate that it is possible for the community to work together to bring awareness to an issue that has been affecting communities throughout the Bay Area for far too long. At the Boys and Girls Club, elderly people, youth, families, and community and faith based organizations gathered to address the violence plaguing communities listen to speeches, provide strategies to prompt peace, and watch performances. Artists and performers creatively spread their messages of peace and solidarity. This day is another important day where we should all recognize that there is a vital need for the community to unite and hopefully one day, eradicate violence.
