Meth Mind Control
Story by Amadaeus

Methamphetamines are a sore subject with many across our fair city, and now, country. Many of us former users are now watching the youth being newly transfixed by this dazzling drug known as crystal meth, shaboo, chris, gak, sh%t, and crank. It's been around for a long time, since the late 1960's when it was called reds and used by truckers, bikers and flight attendants. But to more and more people still caught in the drug culture, it is the guiding light in life.

The down side is large Ð users encounter the police, health problems, and risk the lives of those they care about. Also, long time smokers tend to loose all their teeth after 10 year of steady use.   A 25-year-old user can have the appearance of a 40-year-old. The drug also has the potential of turning solid and cool people into low life junkies that will lie, cheat, and even kill to perpetuate their high. People selling kids toys, stolen bikes, and even cars is very common with people in the grasp of this powerful drug. The wonder of this drug is not just in the high, it is also the complexity of the actual mechanics of smoking that can possess even the most strong of minds. It's not like herb where you just light up and smoke deep, its more intricate. For many users, it is the process of smoking that can be as addictive as the drug itself.

First you have to obtain the ÒDÓ which can some times be an all day mission, then you gotta have a pipe. A crank pipe is a very fragile object that has to be wrapped in a soft and insulating cloth to avoid breaking it. Once away from the rest of the people around and having packed the pipe or ÒpeepaÓ you have to hold the flame low and steady. (Now, before I go on let me be clear I am in no way shape or form condoning, instructing or glamorizing this foul drug that has damaged my family and countless others. This is just to stress my point.)   Then as the crystals begin to liquefy and turn a light brown color, mist slowly fills the pipe and the smoker begins to slowly inhale. The smoker immediately blows the smoke in a large cloud and cools the pipe in a damp rag to avoid burning all the dope. People have died just in this process alone. First time users may try to hold it in, which can kill you in three different ways. One, it causes the heart beat to stress the heart muscle and can cause a heart attack, second this drug is very powerful and can cause an instant overdose, third it can also cause a crystal build up that can seize up the lungs and cause the smoker to die because the sharp crystals bleed the capillaries in the lung that put oxygen into the blood stream. So having illustrated the process of the smoking, now you can imagine how dangerous it is for little conclaves of smokers to congregate in garages, workshops, and bed rooms across the US and elsewhere around this little delicate pipe that holds their emotions, families, and ultimately freedom, in a death grip. You can't address this problem with harsh words or penalties. Meth controls the individual by temporarily filling a void either of love, joy or sometimes just something to do.

So if you have a loved one in the death grip, my advice is to replace it with something better to do, whether it be school, a job, or even just sitting down to talk about the future. The addict does not need your anger or for you to become fixated on their habit. They need a hand to pull them free in a cool, calm and collected way. The best outreach workers are the ones who make sense, can relate and tell the effects from a familiar perspective with out seeming judgmental. The change won't come from police, courts or the foster care system, but from friends and family just being there, turning off the TV, computer and even taking a day off, to rediscover the bonds that are infinitely stronger than this man made drug.

Well said. I'm tired of having to deal with people messed up by meth. Let's hope this stuff goes out of fashion someday.

Truckers called them white crosses and they were pharmaceutical grade AMPHETAMINE in pill form, not the pure toxic poison methamphetamine. Reds were downers, something people aren't into these days....
