East Palo Alto and Gila River Unite!
Fighting for Environmental Justice
Photo Essay by Charisse Domingo

I am here at the Gila River Indian community in Bapchule, Arizona to take photos of Romic, a toxic waste plant located in East Palo Alto, CA that has its second site at the Gila River Indian reservation.   Romic is a multi-million dollar toxic waste facility that recycles, stores, treats and disposes of hazardous waste from all over the world.    For years, despite numerous and repeat violations, government agencies have allowed Romic to operate without full permits and environmental impact reports.

While Romic opens the door to linking East Palo Alto and Gila River, the resilience and the fight from the people who live in those communities are what ultimately binds them together.   This photo essay is a message to Romic from the people who live there: You can't break us down.
