California Students Take on the Governator Last month, students from across the Bay Area hooked up in front of the State building in San Francisco to protest the never ending cuts to education and increased tuition. The protest, which was organized by the union representing the faculty in the CSU, had an estimated 300+ students and community members chanting, "Education is Right, Not a Privilege." One of the most vocal groups of students came up on buses from San Jose to find themselves leading the march and openly calling out Arnold's plan to increase student fees. Students from San Jose State University, who face seeing their tuition double since 2002, organized the free rides from San Jose. The buses were organized by members of a coalition called ÒStand Up,Ó in which Students for Justice is a proud supporter of. Members from various Students for Justice chapters, including San Jose State University, San Jose City College, Evergreen Community College, and De Anza College came out to show that the cuts and fee increases are attacks on students across all of education. Some Budget Facts: *15,000 eligible students were denied enrollment at CSU this year. A first in history of the CSU. *175,000 Students were forced out, or had to delay their academic goals from community colleges in California this year, due to the fee hikes from the last 2 years. *Pell grant, which is the financial aide program from the federal government, has been frozen for the 3 rd year in a row. *Community Colleges students on the quarter system have seen there tuition increase from $7 per unit, to $18 per unit in the last 3 years. *The CSU is facing fee hikes next fall, in which tuition would double since 2002. *Arnold is with-holding money from Prop. 98, which was supposed to guarantee funding to k-12 and community colleges.
