Just Let me See the Doctor
Running Through the Maze of Medi-Cal in Fresno

I don't know why but they just denied me. It all started when my mother went to the health clinic in downtown Fresno. We went there and they made us wait for about five hours and then they decided they wanted to see us. My mother and I went in, and they checked her mouth and everything, and they asked her if she had Medi-Cal.   My mom said no, not yet, and asked if they had applications at the hospital. The doctor said to hold on, and that he would have to talk to someone else.

So he left the room and we waited for about another hour. The doc came back and said, ÒSorry, we cant help you. we can't pull your cracked tooth out of your mouth.Ó So I was like what the f$%#,   you know? They advised us to go to another hospital on the eastside, so we left the hospital that night and had to go to the other one the next day. So the next day came and we went to the Fresno University Medical Center on the eastside of town and asked where to get the application for Medi-Cal. They said,   ÒOh, we don't take medical here anymore, we used to but not anymore, the only way to be eligible for medi-cal in Fresno county is if you are a resident for a certain amount of time.Ó They never said how long the amount of time had to be, so we just left all pissed off and the day after that we went to the welfare office on the Westside of town where we live. We asked them what the f#$% was going on, that we had been to hospitals and so far none of them take Medi-Cal, so come on now. The lady said to just fill out another application for Medi-Cal, so my mom filled it out then and there.

We waited about 3-4 months and we got the applications back and it said we are not eligible.   Hello, low  income housing, the projects, come on now!  So we got a paper saying we were not eligible, and we filled out the applications incorrectly, so we looked over the applications and nothing was wrong. It had all of the information  and everything,  so we went back down to the welfare on the Westside and they referred us to another university medical center of Fresno. But this time this one was on the northside, so we went down there and they said they don't accept have Medi-Cal applications either, so they referred us to another university medical center, but this one was  deeper on the eastside of town. We went into that one and they asked  us if we have proof of income, cause yeah, they do accept Medi-Cal, but they don't have any applications. So from there, they advised us to go to a place called the Heritage Center on the northwest part of Fresno. So we finally went and got our Medi-Cal applications filled out, so we ended up getting just one of us covered. My mother got her medical card, but get this, its not even full medical! We have to go under a plan like Blue Cross or Kaiser, which I find stupid cause they are forgetting what the term medical assitance means. The government pays for it, but they want us to choose a plan and pay out of the pocket. If I had cash, sure, no f*&^ing problem, but I don't. I ain't got nothing and either way I have to file Medi-Cal for myself now, cause   according to the government I am adult at the age of 18. Well that's how the story ends, but was all this  necessary just to get Medi-Cal?
