College Will Never Be the Same
Virginia Tech Shooting Will Change the American College Experience
By Alex Gutierrez
Now that a couple days have past since the killing spree at Virginia Tech, one of the things that I think a lot of people my age are thinking about is, what will college be like now? I am 20-years-old, just took my GED, and am planning on starting college in the fall.
But I mean, who wants to go to a place that could become a target? I had even thought about going to college somewhere in Virginia, but not anymore. It does get you paranoid about attending college, because how do we know if the next school you'll go to has someone deep in the cuts secretly planning to blast people he deep down inside despises?
The thing that Virginia Tech showed me is that security, even after incidents like Columbine, is not being able to cover all angles of a campus. Plus, no one can be responsible for everyone else's actions, and no one can control other peoples' reactions or behavior towards others. The future danger is also that there could be other kids who may even try to copycat this event.
Regardless of the potential mass murderer on campuses, one thing for sure that will happen is increased security, that although is necessary, can end up being an issue with students. Since Monday, colleges and universities, overnight, have tightened up their security with more police spread across campuses, even in the dormitories. Students at San Jose State have been saying they've seen an increase of cops on and around the school. No one wants to end up having to go through a lockdown while trying to get your education.
May the students of Virginia Tech University rest in peace.
