Walking As One
Hundreds of Students Take Over City Hall in Redwood City
Photo Essay by Charisse Domingo

In protest of immigration laws being debated in Congress, students from East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Redwood City staged a district-wide walk out of Sequoia Union School District on April 6, 2006.   The students were from various racial backgrounds, from all grades, and even brought teachers with them. Over 300 students from the different schools all came together to meet at the Redwood City Hall Plaza, where they shook up the usually quite area.

We constantly hear that youth are our future - the only thing wrong with thatÊ (as we see proven above) is recognizing that youth are today.Ê In a society where age is given prevalence over voice - the youth of today are challenging that system of operation.Ê Young people today are more aware of thier surroundings and understand that even though they can't vote - laws passed today will affect them tomorrow and generations to come.Ê They can't have that - in response - they unite.Ê A quote that a young women was carrying says it best,"If my brother's not free- I'm not free" MLK Jr.Ê Thank God the young people of today will take this with them as adults of the future.
