Commemorating Cesar Chavez

Photo Essay by Elizabeth Gonzalez

This past Saturday March 31st a few hundred people gathered at the Mexican Heritage Plaza at King and Alum Rock in San Josˇ to commemorate the life of Cesar Chavez.   People marched carrying red United Farm Workers Flags and wearing Cesar Chavez buttons. The march went down Alum Rock Ave to Scharff Ave., the street where Cesar Chavez lived and where he met Fred Ross of the Community Service Organization. We then walked a little way down San Antonio Rd. and turned left on Sunset to march past Cesar Chavez Elementary. From there we headed back out to King Rd. and the Mexican Heritage Plaza. As we walked along you could hear conversations of older people who had known Cesar Chavez tell stories about him. In the front a drum beat and the sounds of a flute had an indigenous man dancing for a part of the march. Near the back Fogo Na Roupa, a group from Oakland, CA kept the march lively with their drum beats and dancing.
