HerStory
Fifth Element's Annual Women's Day Hip Hop Celebration
Story by Solara Foxie // video and photos by Fernando

On March 5, people from the east coast and around the Bay Area packed MACLA to celebrate the lives of women.    On the stage, perfomers recited spoken word, drummed, rapped, sang, and spun beats.   On the walls, artists displayed photographs, paintings, and mixed media.   On the floor, dancers   integrated new and old school moves.   And the crowd brought the energy.   It filled every inch of the venue.   Folks were also invited to draw and write about the women they admired on a storyboard.

A portion of the proceeds from HerStory went to RedFirecracker and SAGE Ð two organizations working for human rights. Representatives shared information about the trafficking of women and children in developing countries.

Fifth Element is a collective that supports and encourages positive female representation in hip hop and the creative arts.   For more information,   please contact aralosbackwards@yahoo.com.
