Steps of Justice
Marching Through Downtown For Rudy
Story by Juanita Villarreal // Slide Show by Charisse Domingo

On February 26, 2005 we gathered at Roosevelt Park to march for justice, justice for Rudy,(my Uncle who was killed by stage drug agents a year ago) and justice for everyone who has had someone murdered by law enforcement. Rudy Cardenas was a fun loving guy.   He was always happy and enjoyed life.   His kids were his pride and joy.   He was always around to make you laugh or give advise.
Rudy loved people, he talked with everyone, whether it was a grocery clerk, the neighbor, or simply someone walking by.   Downtown San Jose was the place for Rudy.   He loved Downtown San Jose!   He grew up in the neighborhood and loved the community. As his grave sits at the top of the mountain at Oak Hill Cemetery, he still has the luxury of overseeing San Jose.   Because Rudy lived and died in Downtown San Jose, it was the perfect place to march through the neighborhood in remembrance of him.   As we marched through the neighborhood it was a little quiet, and at first, somewhat intimidating. However, as we all marched on together, feeling each other's support, reminding others that we do not want this to happen to them, our spirit was lifted.   A few people from the community joined in our march for justice, told their stories, and helped spread ours.   As we kept marching on more and more people were coming out of their houses to see what was happening.   The neighborhood welcomed us and cheered us on.   A few of the residence even joined us in our march for justice.   We had a variety of participants of all races and ages.   Since the downtown area was where Rudy loved to be and visit friends plus where he was chased, there were many people who knew him or knew of him.   It was an overall feeling of accomplishment as the community welcomed us into their neighborhood, opened their hearts to listen to our story and show their support in our fight for justice.
