San Jose Mardi Gras 2006
Poem by Alex Gutierrez

As nine o'clock hit, downtown is on a roll
with people screaming , drinking ,yelling
it's flat out of control.

But as more heads arrive from Hayward to the eastside,
everyone collides
with a let's party or start funk look in their eye

So we met up with some friends where Santa Clara Street begins
as we walked up to third
"show some titties!" was all you heard
all the girls were taking the lead
but my homie kept yelling in my ear
"come on now girl I know u want some beads"

Hours went past as the police were patrolling
fast car's were  being smashed
as everybody past the chevron gas station last
Heading north on Fourth

A gunshot was the only sound
people ducked down and started looking all around

As the police spoke on the bullhorn
"whoever is in here, I'm arresting you"

The long night was over,  the swat gear was pulled out
were people about to get beat down?
no question without a doubt

Lots of people ran with one plan to get away safe
as did I so for the night I said goodnight and late
