How Cool is Barack? Andre the Giant Cool
It might be the fact that Obama is a far younger candidate than Hillary or the fact that his is the first African-American candidate that actually has a chance to make it to the White House. Whatever it may be, he certainly has the backing of some of today's biggest culturally cool icons. With 312644 friends on his Myspace page and 5,653,891 views of his ÒYes We CanÓ video on Youtube which is generating more buzz than even Paris Hilton. The video includes big names from the film and music industries such as John Legend, Scarlett Johansson, Will.i.am, Common, Lily Allen and much more. As the stars perform segments of Obama's ÒYes We CanÓ speech to a soft guitar melody you cant help but see the diversity of support that Obama is getting. One can see why a 30 and under demographic crowd would find Obama ÒhipÓ and ÒcoolÓ even if he is running for president. But Obama is not only reaching out to mainstream artist that are accepted by the general public, but his camp is also including those icons that candidates would normally steer away from. Renown street and graffiti artist such as The Mac and graphic designers such as Shepard Fairey also know as ÒObey GiantÓ (known for the imagery of Andre the Giant is wheat-pasted on walls all over the world) have now both collaborated with the Obama campaign, both creating unique and highly urban style posters for the-man-with-the-plan, Obama. The Mac and Shepard Fairey are both highly known street artists whose work can bee seen all over the world from anywhere from Tokyo ally's to New York City high-rises. The posters had such a positive response from the urban community that they sold out with a quickness on both the San Francisco based Upper Playground website and the Obey Giant site as well. The Obama camp has even asked Fairey to design another poster that will go on sale on the official campaign site for Obama. ÒI'm honored to be acknowledged by someone so important to the future of our country,Ó says Fairey on his website obeygiant.com. This just goes to show how real Obama is. When most candidates would shy away from graffiti artists who are seen is criminals by most, Obama and his camp see this as visual ambassadors to the communities that are affected by the real issues and problems that America is facing today. With graffiti and art being ways for youth to express and let their cry's be heard, it is common sense that Obama would utilize the graffiti artist to help get his message out. A message of Òchange and progressÓ is the one that the urban community, and the youth who live there, so desperately need to hear. Whether it is a super fresh video on Youtube or a 16 by 30 foot banner on the side of the new Studio Number One office in Echo Park, it is easy to see that Obama has the support of a younger crowd that comes with hope and an optimistic view that change is possible and that Obama can make that change possible.
