Safe City? For Whom?
Story by Anthony Rios

I'm a young Chicano and I live on the Eastside of San Jose off King Road, one of the most famous hoods in the area. It's a place to cruise and the place of the great Cesar Chavez movement.   Statistics show that San Jose is now the safest city in America. What I want to get across is that this information is partly true. But, crime and violence is still a major factor in the huge hispanic communities of San Jose -- mainly east side San Jose. Poverty, violence and drugs plague   my community, there is nothing safe about here.

So for city officials to brag that San Jose is safe is wrong. This must mean that they haven't seen communities like mine, or they just don't care. People from the outside of this city see a pretty one sided view of San Jose. They see rich people and beautiful suburbs since were part of the Silicon Valley. Cops come into my hood, not with the mentality to protect and to serve but to suppress and to regulate on us. That is wrong. None of this is helping my people, its just keeping a vicious cycle going. In my eyes, the city officials see my people as a burden to their dream of having a total suburbia as a city. That's why they raised the price of housing in the area and so many Hispanic families had to leave the area. It's alright because we may not be rich in wealth but we are rich in culture. That's something they will never have. Even with negative sides to my community, I am very proud to live here.
