Starving, But Not Dropping
Poem by Alex Guiterez // art by Ben Custodia

As I wake up to the cold morning with my feet frozen numb
I look up to the sky and Êall I see is the sun,
but I don't feel any warmer
with the cold winds blowing stronger
just me and my family and one blanket
Ê ÊÊsitting on a rock solid bus stop Ê
Êas people walk by we hear complaints
but we keep ourselves restrained ÊÊ
hoping ÊÊforward for better days ÊÊ
I need to find a job and get paid ÊÊ
so we can move up from this situation and be off to a better place
but since were in the daytime all we can do is creep
until nightfall so we can find a place to sleep
pushing two baskets filled with our lives up and Êdown these city streets Êtrying to keep our presence discreet
its hard not to be noticed with the clicking Êclanging of shopping carts
Going to hustle cans to eat
for the day at least enough food Êto try and keep us stable Êand able Êto keep moving
becuase the beat goes on and it donât stop Ê
as long as I am here we wont drop Ê
one day this will all come to an end
but until then friend people will still be starving and without employment with nowhere to go and nowhere to hide
so saddle up campers, cause were in for a long ride. Ê
